Why Do We Face Storms?

Storms. We all go through them. They are something we wish we could avoid. But why do we go through them? That is the question I want to explore today. A common idea is “if God is so mighty and in control, why does He let bad things happen to people?” The answer is simple: we live in a fallen world.

To fully understand, let's go to Genesis, where God gives man dominion over the earth. Genesis 1:26 in the King James Version says, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” Here, God gives dominion over the earth to Adam. However, He told Adam not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Why would God do this? Why would God create an opportunity for people to disobey Him? God wants us to want to be with Him. He does not want a bunch of robots with no choice but to serve Him, but we get to choose to follow Him! Later, in Genesis 3, Adam sins by eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This is the first sin, which gave the power to Satan over the earth. We see this in 2 Corinthians 4:4, where Paul calls Satan the god of this world.

Now this may sound doom and gloom, but that is where our Savior Jesus comes in! Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead three days later with the keys of death! He died so we could have the authority over Satan and all of his cohorts! This is amazing news! Jesus says in John 10:10 in the New American Standard Bible, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” The devil is a thief. He wants to destroy you and everything you have. That is why we face storms. Later, we will explore different people in the Bible who went through storms and how they overcame them.

We have a solution for those storms! We have Jesus! We are not victims! The devil can try to throw whatever he wants at you, but through Jesus, we have the victory! Ephesians 2:20-21 says, “when [God] raised [Jesus] from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named…And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” This is saying that the devil is under the feet of Jesus! And we, the church, are His body, which means the devil is under our feet too! The Bible also says in Ephesians 2:6 that we are raised with Jesus and seated with Him in Heavenly places! The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us (Romans 8:11)! Whatever storm you are facing, I encourage you to look to Jesus, the master of your storm! He will get you through! Remember the devil is under your feet!
